Hello,

I am publishing this in English (Google translate version below), I hope that is all right.
My name is Alexandra Redisch. I am looking for the origins of my last name, and I have found that the small town of Hradisko was known as Redisch in the 1440's, but I am struggling to find more, as I don't speak Slovak or Czech. Can anyone help me?

Also, does anyone know if Redisch is a Jewish name? The people with this name living now tend to be Jewish, but my family is not.

All info and ideas concerning my last name are of interest! Thank you.

/////

To add to the info given by Zora: please note that even though your family is not Jewish, it does not mean it was so always - your predecessors could have converted to the new religion. Yes, you can count surname within the group of jewish names, but it would be too easy (too much simplified) to say: I have Jewish roots from Czechia.....
See here: http://www.cd89.cz/central-european-jew ... me-list/20
According to this: http://www.kdejsme.cz/prijmeni/Redisch/hustota/ , there is currently no one with this surname living in Czechia.
But in the Prager Tagblatt (old newspaper) obituaries (mostly Jewish) in about 100 years ago there was a few families with this surname living in Prague,
(for example: http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno? ... =18&zoom=2 , hope it works)

Does your family tree show origins from Czechia actually? (just curious).

http://alois-sassmann.wz.cz/zidprijm.htm

Redisch je možné napsat i jako: Radisch, Redisch, Reddisch, Redysch, Hradistg, Hradisch, Hiadisch, Hradischt ( a další varianty) = Hradiště

Thank you for your information! I am not sure if my family is from Czechia, but my mother says she heard it from someone - you know what it is like :) According to an old family saga, my family originates from Brno in the 1300's, but I do not know if that is true at all. All I have been able to find out is someone who lived in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1780. I do not know who his parents were, so I am a long way away... I hoped that maybe my name had a connection to the town Hradisko, that my name could mean that my family came from there.
So, apart from a DNA test, there is no good way to find out if I am of Jewish ancestry...?

///

Hello from Texas,

I'll do the same english up top and google translation on the bottom.

I do not mean to hijack your thread but this one of the only one that seems to have a possibility of helping figure out the biggest missing link in my heritage.

On other lines i traces all the way to King George the first but my surname Stross, I believe begins here.

Studying the Stross surname i finally found this in the Austrian Archive. From my limited skilling german my understanding is that Geb. = geboren and this compliation of sourses states that my Great grandfather was born as Hradischko or he was born in Hradischko though I have not found any Strosses on my line in this area prior to 1841. My genetics test proves that I am of European Jewish decent. And all other records stat that they were in the service of Fran Joseph. To my genetics prove that I am related to Joseph Fouche Duc d'Otrante and the Royal family and all on my mothers side she was decent of african american slaves and Claude de Ternant, 3rd Marquis of Dansville-sur-Meuse and Charles Parlange.

But that still leaves that Stross mystery. Is it possible that Geb. Hradischko was a typo?

All help is appreciated it.

Hello from Texas,

Hello and welcome. You're not hijacking anything at all :)

One question to start with: Are you sure that this Emanuel Stross (or maybe one of his siblings) is your ancestor?
I'm asking just to make sure that we won't start working on somethnig that would turn not to be what you actually need...

And if the answer is yes, than... Well, I assume you're searching for a birth record of this Emanuel. According to the encyclopaedia you found, he was indeed born in a village called Hradišťko or Hradištko (note the presence/absence of the diacritic mark above the "t" character; both versions are permitted) in Bohemia, which is the western part of present-day Czech Republic.
Trouble is, that there are no less than 6 settlements with one of these two names. So there are six sets of birth records to search. Do you feel up to the task? ;)

Hello and thank you for responding.

I am certain he is my 2 Great Grandfather. I have his decorations from Franz Joseph and I too have the decorations of m my Great Grandfather Oakar Stross from Franz Joseph and the Crown Prince of Egypt.

I have photographs of the family, his estate in Alexandria. I have found a photo of his grave in the Zentralfriedhof, Vienna. I too have found photo of the graves of his brothers in the Zentralfriedhof. I even have there obituaries.

I do not know now Adolf Stross fits is connected to my family but I do know that my grandfather used to stay with his family in Trieste and Tuscany where he was buried and I have been in touch with one of his relatives his Great Son who says that his family is from Liberec and his grand father Franz Stross abandoned his estate there before Hitler invaded the, before it's time, Art Deco still building still stands and has been restored but is now a government building.

There are building all over Egypt that were donated and by Adolf Stross as he was builder and my side of the family owned Bruder Stross one of the larger trading houses in Egypt.

And if that is not enough proof that I'm looking for the right people I also found a Curriculum Vitae from my Grand Father regarding his life growing up in Egypt and all of the terrible things that happened to his father and his brothers.

I too found a hand written family tree that has all of us to my father in it with nothing but question marks above Emanuel.
Considering that Emanuel was a Member of the Municipal Council of Alexander, a justice on the highest court and just about everyone had Nobel titles and appointments it should be easier to find out what happened to them all. I know Emanuel wrote multiple books as well but I can only find a scanned front cover of one of them.

The world wars all but erased them.

I to found out that Adolf Stross' estate was handled in Kew Gardens where my Great Aunt lived who I can't find much about either even though she a defendant of Joseph Fouche (as well my Great grandmother was).

So there is a possibly that the family is from Liberec but I have found the house of Walter Stross (he died in an accident in Lidia) in Vienna who was apparently a nephew of Adolf Stross and was Austrian Consul General to Egypt after my great grand father Oskar Stross, MD.
Here is Stross Villa in Liberec http://www.historickasidla.cz/redakce/i ... en&dr=1183 build and owned by Franz Stross who was born in Alexandria, Egypt and Adolf's son.

Too having the Liberec connection means may mean we are treated to Sir Barnett Stross who saved the city from Hitler but is from Strasberg, Pabianice, Poland which too could be another place to look.

I'm up to the task I don't know how quick I will be able to do stall but I would just need to know how and where to start.

Best,

Alexander Bayonne Stross

OK, OK, I believe you :)
Well, this is one hell of family history, I must say. A lot to be proud of.

The encyclopedia you posted clearly states, that Walter was Adolf's son ("Walter S. ... , Sohn des Stadtrats von Alexandria Adolf S.") and Emanuel's nefew. So Adolf, father of Walter and Franz, had to be Emanuel's brother and Oskar's uncle, hadn't he?
Anyway, your mention of the Stross Villa helps a lot. I found this thesis (in Czech) on the architecture of this interesting building, and it says, that Franz moved to Liberec after he was forced to run from Egypt in 1919, and that it was his wife's family that was based there, not his own. So Liberec would be a false lead.

I think you're misinterpreting Barnett Stross' personal data. He was indeed born in Pabianice, today's Poland, but Strasberg was actually his real family name. He later changed it to Stross, but that wasn't the surname he was born with.
So he can't have anything to do with your family.

Alright, let's see what we can do about this :)

First thing to be said: as you probably know (but I didn't know until now), the Stross were a jewish family.
That is quite important, as it means, that all of their bohemian (czech) records from the first half of the 19th century will be in jewish documents. And those are much harder to find and search than those of their christian coinahbitants.

But it's still not a lost cause :) I think here might be something for you to start with.
And Emanuel is supposed to be born in Hradištko or Hradišťko, Bohemia. I was able to find seven different localities in Bohemia that do or formerly did bear this name. See them here. One of them must be the one.
So, you know the place(s), you know the time (October 24, 1841), the next step is to search the relevant records (at least those available online).

That certainly makes things quite a bit more complicated. At least 6 places that it could be and it could not even be those places. The reason I do lean towards it being one of them is that Leopold Stross and Wife Theresa's Graves have that Town on them https://flic.kr/p/4VwJrM

According to my grandfather his brothers were Gustave and Leopold. His sister was Fanny Fried (geb Stross). There is another Emanuel born one year later 1844 who I believe to be Walter's Uncle so I think that this document may not be accurate. Then again the obituaries do not lend to that Emanuel being Adolf's Brother as pass prior to that Emanuel so the time line doesn't work.

I had believed that Adolf was a Brother of the Enamel but the obituaries never lined up though age-wise ti would make sense so I can only assume that Emanuel and Adolf are cousins.

I have ordered a copy of Adolf's estate from here I hope it's the correct Adolf as they spell it Adolph here. But it is from the Aliexandirien Consul so it would be very unusual if it was not especially considering it is where some my direct family live/lived http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.u ... r/C7190471. I have no Idea how long it will take to get here.

It would be quite a family to proud of had I know anything about it until the last year of my fathers life. Now i'm having to put all the pieces together. I didn't even know that I had jewish heritage until 3 years ago just prior to my father death and even he acted as if he didn't know.

Send me a PM with your email and I will link you my tree so you can see what photographs and documentation I have collected.
